Did you know that Wednesday is no longer plain old Wednesday? At St Andrew’s it has a new name – War on Waste Wednesday! And our student group of eco warriors are doing their best to spread the word about it.

Each Wednesday, simply bring your filled orange bags to morning drop off. Eligible containers are worth 10c each, and we are donating 100% of funds raised to Coolum & North Shore Coast Care who recently visited the College to show us what they do with donations.

Last year they rescued 23 live turtles and took them to Sealife for rehabilitation and collected data on 30 deceased sea turtles to find out the cause. Sadly, around 80% of them had signs of floating syndrome – when a turtle ingests floating matter and it gets stuck in their stomach, meaning they can’t eat so they starve.

Money raised goes towards buckets, sand pegs and mesh to protect turtle nests, slings for sick or injured turtles and GPS’s to help track them.

St Andrew’s student Orlando said we can “all make a difference” by not using items such as hard and soft plastics in our home, reducing the amount we use and recycling!

Our goal is to raise $1,000 through orange bag recycling by the end of the 2019 school year. New orange bags can be collected at the College’s Primary, Secondary and Main Admins.
